Escapism vs. True Rest in God

Escapism or Rest in God by O. Yvette Ward

I heard this word “escapism” while listening to a YouTuber. I had to write about it because it’s real.

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to “check out” when life feels heavy? Some of us turn to a TV marathon, others to shopping sprees, endless scrolling, or even pouring ourselves into work.

These things aren’t bad in themselves, but when they become our way of avoiding life instead of living it, that’s escapism.

Escapism is simply the act of running away from reality. It whispers, “This is too much, let me hide for a while.” And for a moment, it might feel like relief.

But here’s the truth: the burden is still there when we return. The problem hasn’t healed, the heartache hasn’t mended, and the peace we long for still feels out of reach.

But Jesus offers us something so much better. He doesn’t say, “Run away.”

He says, Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. -Matthew 11:28.

That’s not escapism, at that point it’s transformation. When we bring our stress, fears, and exhaustion to Him, He doesn’t distract us from them. Jesus exchanges them for His peace.

Think of the difference this way:

  • Escapism numbs us for a little while.

  • God’s presence renews us for the journey ahead.

So the next time you catch yourself reaching for escape, pause and ask: What am I really needing right now?

If it’s peace, comfort, or strength, no amount of scrolling or shopping will truly provide it. But prayer will. His Word will. Sitting still in His presence will.

Choose rest over escape. Lay down the weight we’ve been carrying and lean into the One who promises, My yoke is easy, and My burden is light -Matthew 11:30.

Reflection: What’s one area in your life where you’ve been escaping instead of inviting God in? How might you trade that escape for His true rest this week?
